Koala Conservation Australia automotive sponsorship: event photography in Port Macquarie

An automotive sponsor partnered with Koala Conservation Australia in Port Macquarie, and we were chosen to photograph the sponsorship. Here's how we captured the brand, the people and the koalas.

When an automotive sponsor partnered with Koala Conservation Australia in Port Macquarie, both organisations wanted the moment documented properly. Not a few phone snaps for a press release, but a full set of images that could tell the story of the sponsorship across media, social channels, annual reports and partner presentations. We were chosen to capture the day.

This is a look at how we approached corporate sponsorship photography at one of Port Macquarie's most loved conservation sites, and why the same thinking applies to every conference, launch and business event we photograph.

A sponsorship with a real story behind it

Koala Conservation Australia cares for sick, injured and orphaned koalas, and its enclosures are home to koalas who can't return to the wild. The automotive sponsorship supports that work directly, with the sponsor's name on the enclosure of a koala called Nigel and a co-branded vehicle supporting the team on the ground.

That gave us a clear brief. The images needed to show the partnership, the people behind it and, most importantly, the koalas the partnership exists for. Sponsors want to see their brand presented with care, and charities want their mission front and centre. Good sponsorship photography does both in the same frame.

Capturing the brand without forcing it

Branding should be visible, never awkward. We planned the coverage around the places where the automotive partnership naturally lives: the enclosure signage, the interpretive panels and the branded vehicle. Detail shots like the enclosure sign give the marketing team clean, crop-friendly images for social posts and reports, while wider frames place the signage in context with the koalas and the people.

The vehicle handover portrait is a classic sponsorship image, and it earns its place. It's the shot a media outlet will run, so it has to be sharp, well lit and composed with room for headlines and cropping.

The moments in between

Formal portraits tell people what happened. The candid moments tell them how it felt. As the team walked the sponsor representative through the enclosures, we worked quietly in the background to capture genuine reactions, conversations and the excitement of spotting a koala up in the gums.

The weather was overcast with showers rolling through, which is real event photography: you work with the conditions you're given. Soft cloud cover actually suited the bush setting, keeping skin tones even and the greens of the eucalypts rich, and the wet ground added reflections and atmosphere to the wider frames.

The koalas, of course

No sponsorship story at a koala conservation site is complete without the koalas themselves. We used a long lens to capture them without disturbance, keeping our distance and letting them do what koalas do best.

Handshakes, team portraits and the hero shot

Every corporate event needs a set of reliable, well-composed key images: the handshake, the team portrait and a hero shot that brings everything together. We set these up efficiently so nobody felt like they were standing around waiting, then went straight back to capturing the day.

The final group portrait in front of Nigel's enclosure ties the whole story together in a single frame: the people, the partnership signage, the conservation message and Nigel himself resting in the tree behind them.

Why sponsorship and event photography matters

A sponsorship is an investment, and images are how that investment gets seen. A well-photographed event gives both partners content they can use for months: press releases, LinkedIn posts, newsletters, websites, sponsor reports and next year's pitch deck. It also shows the community the real impact of corporate support.

That's the same approach we bring to all of our conference photography and video and business and brand photography work across Port Macquarie and the Mid North Coast:

  • Plan around the story. We find out what the images need to achieve before the day, not after.
  • Cover the essentials. Key moments, speakers, handshakes, group portraits and branding, delivered sharp and ready to use.
  • Capture the atmosphere. Candid moments that show the energy of the room, or the bush.
  • Deliver fast. Media-ready selects when you need them, followed by the full edited gallery.
